I work on fiction of all sorts (literary and commercial, as well as mysteries and thrillers) and most forms of narrative nonfiction (memoir, history, biography, current affairs, psychology) with authors, agents and publishers, doing whatever is needed: structural work, line editing, dialogue, etc., as well as helping authors with the writing of book proposal packages.
In fiction, I have worked with Susan Fromberg Schaeffer (Anya); Ntozake Shange (For Colored Girls, Betsey Brown, Some Sing, Some Cry); J. California Cooper (Some Soul to Keep, Homemade Love); Ernestro Maestre (The Lazarus Rhumba); and Rabih Allemeddine (Koolaids). In mystery fiction I have edited Linda Barnes, Joan Hess, Steven Saylor, Barbara Neeley and Eliot Pattison, among many others.
In non-fiction, I am particularly interested in history and current affairs (Neufeld and Berenbaums The Bombing of Auschwitz, Fred Jeromes The Einstein File, George & Meredith Friedmans The Future of War, Randy Shiltss And the Band Played On and Conduct Unbecoming) as well as memoirs (Lars Eighners Travels With Lizbeth, Eustacia Cutlerss A Thorn in My Pocket: Temple Grandins Mother Tells the Family Story) and biography and autobiography (David Maceys Frantz Fanon, G. Gordon Liddys Will, and Mr. T. by Mr. T.). I am interested in virtually all forms of non-fiction except cookbooks, travel books and how-to books.
I was awarded the Lambda Literary Award for Editing in l993, the Literary Market Place Editor of the Year Award in l994, and The Publishing Triangle Editors Award in 2002. Books Ive worked with have won numerous citations (an American Book Award for Judith Thurmans Isak Dinesen, the American Mystery Award for Best Private Eye Novel for Linda Barness A Trouble of Fools, and Edgar Award for Best First Novel for Eliot Pattisons Skull Mantra) as well as appearing on best-sellers lists (G. Gordon Liddys autobiography Will, Randy Shiltss And the Band Played On).
