There's a continuum of editorial work that ranges from general evaluation at one end to ghost-writing at the other, and I work at all points along it.
While I work in nearly all subject areas, particular interests include memoir/personal narrative, narrative nonfiction, popular culture, literary and popular fiction, and anything funny. I work on business and self-help projects if they have a strong narrative element. I don't do genre fiction, like thrillers or fantasy/sci-fi.
I have more than twenty years' in-house experience in adult trade publishing, most recently as Executive Editor of the Random House Publishing Group and Editorial Director of its Villard imprint. Before that I was a Senior Editor at Doubleday and Editorial Director of its Main Street Books imprint. Before that I was an actor.
Writers whose work I have acquired and edited include Kim Barnes, Robert Bingham, Firoozeh Dumas, Kerstin Ekman, Janice Erlbaum, Dave Itzkoff, Jon Katz, William Kotzwinkle, Elizabeth Lesser, Bret Lott, Merrill Markoe, Howard Frank Mosher, Laurie Notaro, Stewart O'Nan, C. D. Payne, Dan Zevin, and Alan Zweibel. Among the many titles I edited are numerous New York Times and national bestsellers; a Pulitzer finalist; four Thurber Prize for American Humor finalists; a Thurber Prize for American Humor winner; and handful of bestselling celebrity books, including titles by Aretha Franklin, Jesse Ventura, David Blaine, Melissa Etheridge, and Patricia Heaton.
